Winter Solstice 2010
“Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.”
Alfred Lord Tennyson

Remembering
standing in the trenches (at Imperial War Museum) today I remember how my Grandmother and her sisters lost all their brothers in WW1
And thought of my Father riding his motorbike across the desert relaying messages.
My Mother, traumatised when she was evacuated from London, something that haunted her for the rest of her life
My Grandfather collecting horses shipped fresh from Australia and training them for the Cavalry.
War affected them all – and today too, my son’s friend blasted with shrapnel in Afghanistan and his colleague left with no legs.
War – so painful – but with the ability to bring out the best in people.
Ordinary people living extraordinary lives.
Today at the War Museum were ancient veterans, ex squaddies, children and grandchildren – all remembering.
My Grandson with other children forging a poppy from red card and a regimental button – placing it with the rest at the feet of a V2 rocket
Children remembering something that they never knew – but did know – the memory imprinted into their DNA

Light of my Life
My grandspawn is a seasoned traveller with many thousands of air miles under his belt. I took this shot on the return flight from Spain in May 2010.
I have to say it’s a sheer pleasure to travel with him, perhaps because he has travelling in his blood. One day I hope to make a round the world trip with him, hopefully sooner rather than later.
